The NGI/DTNVS-XLS (Dual Tube Night Vision System) is a Product Improved version of the DTNVG (Dual Tube Night Vision Goggle) first introduced in 2016, integrating four years of service with military, law enforcement, and civilian end-users worldwide, resulting a lighter weight, yet more durable housing with numerous improvements and design enhancements that make the NGI/DTNVS-XLS easier to support and maintain.
The new Night Goggles, Inc. NGI/DTNVS-XLS systems are built and collimated in-house by Night Goggles, Inc. at our Redlands, California facility using matched Elbit F9400XLSH Generation 3, Auto-gated, Thin-Filmed White Phosphor image intensifier tubes with factory data sheets, and we are proud to be able to offer them at some of the lowest prices ever for Factory-New, Gen. 3 WP systems!
Elbit Systems of America-Night Vision (ESA-NV), based in Roanoke, Virginia, formerly the Night Vision division of Harris Corporation prior to their merger with L3 Technologies and previously known as ITT/Exelis is one of the premier manufacturers of Generation 3 image intensifiers, and has long been known as an industry leader in visual augmentation systems, including the AN/PSQ-20 ENVG Night Vision/Thermal Fusion system, and was recently awarded the contract for the United States Marine Corps’ Squad BNVG program.
While TNVC’s MIL-SPEC systems still represent the absolute best performance money can buy, these new Night Goggles systems are an excellent option for those who are looking for a lower-cost Gen. 3 White Phosphor NVG, and are sure to be popular with hunters, enthusiasts, and tactical shooters alike! These COM-SPEC systems are the absolute best value for a new WP goggle system without paying for TNVC’s premium MIL-SPEC systems.
The Elbit Systems of America F9400XLSH image intensifier tubes being used in the NGI/DTNVS-XLS systems are considered “MIL-SPEC fallouts,” and therefore “Commercial Spec” or “COM-SPEC” tubes that do not necessarily meet the MIL-SPEC requirements of the ESA-NV YH-series image intensifier tubes, COM-SPEC does not mean that they are “bad tubes” or poor performers. The XLSH and SLH series tubes are still excellent performers that simply failed to meet one or another of the requirements to be considered a “MIL-SPEC” tube. These requirements may range from certain values being outside of MIN/MAX tolerances or cosmetics—however in many cases may be indistinguishable from YH-series tubes based on data sheets, meaning that any flaws or defects that preclude a MIL-SPEC classification could be microscopic and/or largely invisible in normal use.
The very lowest performance figures of these XLSH tubes approximate U.S. OMNI V performance, often considered to be the first of the modern “high performance” night vision, while the highest spec’ed units rival the best modern “super-tubes.” We do not sort them beyond ESA-NV’s specs, and individual tubes can vary in performance from tube to tube, however no hand-select option will be available for these systems.
While the NGI/DTNVS-XLS is built with COM-SPEC image intensifier tubes and ACTinBlack housings, the rest of the system is built with 100% MIL-SPEC components, including optics and subcomponents sourced from USGI contractors. By building these units entirely in-house, we are able to tightly control all QA and QC of these devices, including collimation to ensure that they meet our exacting standards without relying on third-party assemblers, have them drop-shipped, wait on inventory from suppliers that can lead to quality issues, customer support issues, and the substitution of sub-standard parts in assemblies. And since NGI sources these COM-SPEC tubes directly from ESA-NV, and we have chosen to pass on our savings to YOU, our customers, by offering these Night Goggles NGI/DTNVS-XLS systems at some of the lowest prices ever for articulating Gen. 3 WP Binocular Night Vision Goggles.
Non-MIL-SPEC tubes should mean non-MIL-SPEC prices!
Even for these COM-SPEC units we WILL NOT not compromise by purchasing lower cost, non-standard, non-MIL-SPEC optics and housing components from vendors looking to make a quick buck on products that “look the part,” but are unable to perform the same as MIL-SPEC components–the price savings is entirely in the image intensifiers. This also means that these units can come backed by Night Goggles’ and TNVC’s Lifetime Limited Warranty, covering the housing and system for the lifetime of the unit, and 10 years for the image intensifier tube. These “COM-SPEC” systems are the absolute best value for a new WP goggle system without paying for TNVC’s premium MIL-SPEC systems.
The NGI/DTNVS-XLS is a lightweight, articulating goggle design, and is built on proven technology and enhanced for greater reliability compared to previous generations of Night Vision Binoculars.
At 17.9 ounces the NGI/DTNVS-XLS is one of the lightest weight, Binocular Night Vision Devices (BNVD) currently available on the market. Despite the light weight, the NGI/DTNVS-XLS does not sacrifice durability or ruggedness, and exceeds MIL-STD-810G and USSOCOM test protocols for drop and impact by a factor of two. The NGI/DTNVS-XLS is also rated for water immersion at 66 ft. (20m) for two (2) hours.
The independently pivoting monocular pod design allows users to rotate the individual monocular pods away from the center of the housing and out of the wearer’s field of view, allowing clear, unobstructed natural vision through one or both eyes. This can be a huge benefit in enclosed spaces like vehicles or in close quarters, where stowing the goggles could create unnecessary snag hazards or otherwise be an impediment to the end-user.
When the NGI/DTNVS-XLS is stowed, the articulating pods can also be folded back to bring the goggles center of gravity closer to the wearer’s head, improving balance and comfort while worn, while reducing the profile of the wearer.
Moreover, when rotated, the NGI/DTNVS-XLS features automatic individual channel cut-offs, which cuts power to the image intensifier tube, shutting it off when rotated beyond approximately 60 degrees from the center housing (well beyond realistic IPD adjustments), both to protect the image intensifier tube and prevent backsplash when the monocular pods are rotated away from the wearer’s field of view.
The NGI/DTNVS-XLS is a full-featured goggle with adjustable objective and diopter focus, using standard PVS-14 style optical assemblies, meaning they are compatible with common accessories for the PVS-14, as well as an onboard IR LED with a built-in ON/OFF indicator that alerts the wearer to whether the onboard IR is switched on inside the tube, as well as a low battery indicator light.
The DTNVS housing is designed and manufactured by ACTinBlack, based in Luxembourg, a leading manufacturer and supplier of night vision equipment to European military and law enforcement customers.
Based on extensive end-user feedback from U.S. and international military, SOF, and law enforcement end-users, the DTNVS utilizes MX-10160 format image intensifiers with Automatic Brightness Control (ABC) only. While some users do prefer manual gain systems and expansive feature lists, the overwhelming feedback from end-users has been that it is unnecessary in a binocular system, and simply ends up being an added complexity that could potentially cause problems if tinkered with or mis-adjusted while on mission. Moreover, MX-10160 ANVIS/aviation format image intensifier tubes are often held to stricter standards for image shift and alignment, as they are intended specifically for binocular systems, making them easier to assemble, maintain, and properly collimate.
Similarly, the DTNVS is powered by a single CR123 battery, which can provide over 25 hours of battery life on a single lithium cell. While there are benefits to AA powered binocular systems, power consumption and battery efficiency are not one of them, hence why most AA powered BNVDs include a provision for an external power supply, often requiring expensive interface cables and battery packs, and while conversion parts will be available for the DTNVS to support external power supplies, the basic configuration of the DTNVS does not include an external power option, reducing weight, complexity, and another potential ingress point for moisture and foreign debris.
The NGI/DTNVS-XLS does not come with Interpupillary Distance (IPD) Stops, as most users do not find them to be necessary. However, some users do find the IPD Stops to be a useful addition to ensure that the monocular pods return to the same position when rotated back down. Rather than choosing one or the other, ACTinBlack has designed an optional IPD Stop Adapter, which gives individual users the choice as to whether to use the IPD Stops or not. The IPD Stop Adapter Plate is available separately for users who would prefer to have this capability.
The NGI/DTNVS-XLS is one of the best value BNVDs currently available–it truly “has it all,” light weight with packed feature set, and as always, comes with NGI’s industry leading Lifetime Limited Warranty!
